Before starting any kind of remedial action, an initial analysis of the situation had to be carried out, simply by inspecting and asking questions.
The initial findings we found are compiled as follows:
- Messy and dirty
- Tools and parts mixed
- Tools on the floor
- No identification of products
- No location for assembly
- Consumables (ex: engines) mixed with in process products
- DATA:
- no statistics of the production
- no planning displayed
- records missing (orders sheets not filled correctly)
- no preventive maintenance
- Storage room not organized: mixed with new & obsolete references
- Obsolete references not identified

Conclusion
After this first step, it appeared that basic manufacturing organizational methods were not implemented (ex: 5S).
The main constraint was time. This first analysis was completed in June 2008 and on early September, top management from Paris would be coming for meeting and inspecting the facilities (the purpose of this visit wast he future of this manufacturing center). So the top priorities were cleaning and ordering.
